Using Concept Maps to Organize an Earth Science Course
Created by: Carla Companion
This concept map illustrates an oceanography course broken into component pieces, including specific labs and activities that contribute to a particular lesson. The white concepts are concepts that the students should have covered in previous courses - but may need some review when the connections are revealed. This oceanography course covers the ocean and the atmosphere (red concepts) as well as several key physical concepts (pressure, heat capacity, density) that contribute to the understanding of ocean processes. Example activities are attached to the labs affiliated with "Heat Capacity" and "Temperature, Salinity, Density." Educators can use this technique to connect prior knowledge and content to matching lab activities, and as a visual to demonstrate progress through a course.
