Workspace Buttons Overview
  • The buttons above the workspace on the [Concept Map Builder] are described from left to right below.
    i. Hammer - Build Mode Menu options:
    • Center Map to Window aligns your map to the center of the window
    • Fit map to window will adjust the size of the concept map to fit in the window.
    • Toggle color blocks will remove or show the color bar
    • Toggle scale bar will remove or show the scale bar
Create New Objects (Concepts, Lines, Text Boxes)
  • Concepts
    i. Click the "Concept Tool", select a shape, then double click on the workspace to plant a concept.
    ii. Once planted, clicking on the concept opens a second menu that allows for individual concept editing (color, text, opacity, line thickness). Concept dimensions can also be edited after planting using the expanding arrow button
  • Lines
    i. Click on the "Line Tool", make a selection, then double click on the workspace to plant the line.
    • Straight
    • Curved
    • Fork

Moving Objects

Snapping Objects

"Snapping" objects together is a way to connect them.

i. To snap a line to a concept:

  • Click on the line “handle” (square box at either end of line) and drag it over the desired concept. The edges around the concept will flash light blue, to indicate that the line has been successfully attached to the concept.

ii. To “unsnap” a line from a concept:

  • Click and drag the line handles away from the concept.
Editing Objects
  • All objects (lines, forks, concepts, text boxes) can be edited once they are created on the workspace. Clicking once on lines, text boxes or concepts will bring up an editing menu that you can use to make changes.  "Click here" to go to the "edit concepts" section or "edit lines" section or "edit text box" section.
  • To delete a concept, line, or text box, click once on it. A small x will appear and upon clicking that, the object will be deleted from the workspace.
Add Text Boxes

Click on the "Text Box tool" and then double click on the map workspace to plant a text box. Double click within the text box to add text and change the text box properties.

Edit Concepts

To edit a concept: click once on the concept. Three buttons and a conceptediting menu will appear around the concept.

Edit Lines/Forks

To edit a line or fork: click once on the line or fork between two concepts. A line editing toolbox will appear on the work space with the following options:

Vocabulary Navigator
  • The concept map tool is connected to collections of existing concepts and terms stored in "ontologies." These contain defined concepts or terms that are linked together by experts, representing a specific area of knowledge and are called "vocabularies." Connections between these terms can be visualized and explored using the vocabulary navigator.
Attaching Resource Database Items, Videos, and Visualizations
  • The Resource Browser button is located at the top of the concept mapping workspace [insert screengrab of header]. To search for a resource (images, videos, lessons, visualizations, or other concept maps), first click the “Resource Browser” button. A pop up will appear with a “Search by Keyword” field and a list of available resources. Simply type your query into the search box and high “Search”

  • The Resource Browser button is located at the top of the concept mapping work space. To search for a concept map to add, first click the “Resource Browser” button. A pop up will appear with a “Search by Keyword” field and a list of available resources. Simply type your query into the search box and high “Search”

Moving Objects

  • Once concepts and text boxes are planted on the workspace, they can be moved around the screen, while lines and forks can be stretched or shrunk.
  • To move the entire map, simply click and drag your mouse around the workspace.
  • To move a concept or text box, click and drag it to the desired location.

Edit Concepts

To edit a concept, click once on the concept. Three buttons and a concept-editing menu will appear around the concept.

Export as an Image
  • Click on the hammer icon in the upper left corner of your map for a list of options, including "Export as PNG”
  • Click on the "Export as PNG" link
  • Use your computer’s popup to name and save the file.

Lines

Embed a Map in a Web Page [Not currently enabled]
  • Click on the hammer icon in the upper left corner of your map for a list of options, including "Embed Map."
  • Click on the "Embed Map" link In the pop up window, enter a map size (width and height).
  • The default, in pixels, is 600 wide (w) by 600 high (h), but this can be adjusted by typing in new dimensions.
  • Copy the code in the text box and insert it on your web document, between the body tags, at the location you want your map to display.
     
Create a New Map
  • To create a new concept map, click on the Concept Maps link on the OOI home page menu bar and scroll to Create a Concept Map. The Concept Map Builder will open with a new workspace.
  • To view a list of your maps return to the concept Maps link at the top of the page (orange bar) and navigate to "My Concept Maps".
